The planetarium is in Sunset Beach on High Market Street. The planetarium offers interactive science exhibits, planetarium shows, astronomy programs, and events. It is a very fun, family-friendly atmosphere and a great way to spend a play date with other families, as you get to know people in Sunset Beach.
Museum of Coastal Carolina
The Museum of Coastal Carolina is located in nearby Ocean Isle Beach. The museum is focused on maritime and natural history exhibits. There are some fun touch tanks, and live animals in addition to the aquariums. There are several great kid-oriented programs and events happening throughout the year at the museum.
Outdoor adventure activities
The beach, of course, is always a major draw and what brings people to want to stay in Sunset Beach full-time. Sunset Beach is famous for having the biggest stretch of uninhibited sandy beach in the area. It is always fun to get the kiddos outdoors, and there is always something new to experience and have fun with. Great thing about the beach is there’s plenty to watch, observe, and do, and every time you go, it is different, and kids can easily entertain themselves for a significant amount of time, as well as enjoy activities you coordinate.
Shalotte River Swamp Park
The Shallot River Swamp Park is more than just a natural outdoor space. There are some fun features around the area to elevate your outdoor adventure experience. Have fun with aerial features, zip lines, swamp tours, go-karts, and more. There are also other fun adventures near the park, like fishing, charters, surfing lessons, dolphin cruises, and mini golf.
Organized clubs and programs
Most of the organized youth clubs and programs are on a county/regional level. Brunswick County Parks and Recreation runs the structured youth activities in the area around Sunset Beach, often running out of nearby Shallotte or Ocean Isle Beach.
Youth sports league
There are a few youth sports leagues in the area, offering soccer in the spring and fall, basketball, flag football, cheerleading, T-ball/baseball, and more through the county parks system. i9 Sports also provides some youth sports programs like soccer and flag football at Shallot Middle School.
YMCA programs
The YMCA of Brunswick County has a lot of programs for kids of all ages and a popular after-school care program with clubs. You can sign your young family members up for sports, fitness classes, theater, and more.

The Boys and Girls Club of Brunswick County offers after-school/summer programs with arts, sports, education, health, wellness, leadership, and more.
Sunset Beach Mom and Me Group
There is an informal, longstanding group called the Sunsest Beach Mom and Me group, which also includes families from Ocean Isle. It is mainly focused on moms of little ones with children ages 3 to 6, but can include younger children as well. The group hosts casual meetups like playdates, beach time, pool time, etc.
