If living in an RV full time is your dream, we have some practical and emotional realities that don’t always get talked about for you to consider. Moving into an RV can be a great way to embrace freedom, save money, and make lifelong memories, but the RVers who are enjoying their lifestyle the most are prepared to handle factors like the ones we’ll outline here.
What Do You Do About Mail?
You might be surprised how often you still need a physical mailing address — even in a digital world. Banks, the DMV, taxes, prescriptions — they all still want to send you things. So how do full-time RVers handle it?
There are a few options. You can sign up for a mail forwarding service like Escapees, Traveling Mailbox, or USPS. You may not have a permanent address, but you can have the mail forwarded to you as you land at different temporary locations, like an RV park. If you’ll be on the road too frequently for this, maybe you have a close friend or family member who would be willing to let your mail be forwarded to them so it’s landing in a safe place. For package deliveries and one time mail, you can often schedule a post office pickup at a designated point along the road.
How Will Holidays Be Different in an RV?
Your holiday celebrations will likely look different as you transition to your new lifestyle, but different doesn’t equal bad. You might miss hosting Thanksgiving dinner in your dining room or decorating a tree in your living room. Seasoned full time RVers recommend making new traditions instead of trying to replicate everything you’ve always done.
Here are some tips from those who’ve been celebrating holidays on the road for a while:
-
Celebrate in a warm-weather campground with a potluck among fellow travelers.
- Find other RVers who want to get together for a new tradition, like Christmas carols around the campfire or a New Year’s game night.
-
Use mini decorations that store easily. Lots of RVers decorate with string lights, collapsible trees, or window clings.
-
Visit friends or family, Remember, just because you’re mobile doesn’t mean you’re disconnected. You can plan your travels to align your location with loved ones during a favorite holiday.
Will I Feel Lonely in an RV?
Full-time RV living offers freedom, but it can also be isolating — especially if you’re traveling solo or you’re introverted. It takes effort to build friendships on the road, but there’s a surprisingly strong RV community out there once you start tapping into it. Be open to chatting with people along the way, and plan to keep in touch with your loved ones at least a few times a month.
One great way to combat lonelinenss is to plan some stays at friendly RV parks where you can get to know others who live on the road and feel the comfort of connection. If you’re planning to be in the Dallas area, we would love to host you at Southern Belle RV Park. Our park features:
- Fenced dog park
- Wash house
- Fire pits
- Picnic areas
- On site laundry
- Vending machines
- On site management
